John R. Schmid

John R. Schmid, 79, passed away from complications of a stroke on January 22, 2015. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, January 31, 2015, at 10:30 AM at Spirit of Life Catholic Church in Mandan, ND. Burial will be held on Monday at 11:00 AM at the ND Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND. Visitation will be Friday, January 30, from 5:00 – 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service where a vigil service will begin at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue on Saturday one hour prior to the service at the church. John R. Schmid was born May 22, 1935, to Richard S. and Elva Altermatt Schmid. He was raised in Eden Valley, MN, and graduated from the College of St. Thomas in 1957. John married the love of his life, and coincidently the girl next door, Luanne Mary Fink. Together they raised five children built on a foundation of strong faith and family values. John began his career working with the FDIC in 1957. He returned home to manage the State Bank of Eden Valley, which was purchased from his father in 1963. He enjoyed his career, made many friends, and lovingly raised his family during the twenty years he spent in Eden Valley. In 1985, wanting to continue in banking, he purchased Grant County State Bank in Carson, ND. He managed and helped guide the bank for 30 years. John's life was centered around faith and family. He had many special times with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Many of these occasions were spent fishing, hunting, traveling, playing cards, and watching sports. John is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife of 51 years, Luanne M. Schmid; his children, John Sandy, Pauline Bob Gulick, Philip Geri, Brian Larri, David Carrie; eleven grandchildren, Kristina Jordan, Michael Samantha, Andrew Annie, Stephanie, Brandon, Kaitlyn, Emily, Anna, Steven, Abby, and John Victor; three great-grandchildren, Trenton, Einar, and Michael John; two sisters, Margaret Bartelme, and Mary Pierre Combal; and his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Fr. Fred Fink, Yvonne Roger Leick, Lorraine Fink, and Mary Lou Fink. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Carol Moody; four brothers-in-law, Charles Moody, Joseph Bartelme, Dr. Robert Fink, and Joseph Steinke; and one sister-in-law, Colleen Steinke.
