Joseph "Joe" Rise

Joseph Odin Rise, 61, died November 25, 2012, at his home in Kent, WA. Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, December 6, at Parkway Funeral Services, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Pastor Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be held at the Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery, north of Driscoll, following the funeral service and luncheon. Joseph "Joe" Rise was born on September 12, 1951, in Hazen, ND, to his parents Joseph and Amelia Hanwell Rise. He was raised in Wilton, where he graduated high school in 1969. While in high school, he played basketball and junior legion baseball. He received his bachelor's degree from Minot State University in 1974. He was a member of the "social" fraternity Tau Kappa Epsilon TKE. For the past 18 years, Joe worked for Washington Division of Disability Determination and was a member of the National Association of Disability Examiners NADE. He was currently serving on the board of directors and was also the Pacific Regional Director for NADE. Joe was a conscientious and reliable employee and very much respected in his profession. Joe was a member of the American Legion in Kent for the past 15 years. He was the Past Commander and was currently serving as the First Vice-Commander of the Sons of American Legion SAL Squadron 15. Joe was intricate in initiating fundraising events to support local causes such as Toys for Tots, Boys and Girls State scholarships, Santa's Castle and adopting military families every year for Christmas. In addition, SAL provided scholarships for local students to attend college. He was dedicated to providing assistance to those in need. His charitable sentiment will be greatly missed. Unc or Bucky, as many knew him was an honest, humble, enduring and humorous man who will be significantly missed by all who knew and loved him. He loved to listen to and tell stories. While at home in Washington, he enjoyed making an occasional stop at the casino for a quick game of black jack, visiting with his buddies at the Legion, watching old westerns or detective shows, and of course, Packer and Seahawk football. He very much looked forward to his annual summer trip home to North Dakota to visit his family. He never missed the opportunity to take in some games at the McQuade Charity Softball Tournament, attending the Pearson/Hanwell Family Picnic, making the trip to Minot to visit TKE friends, and taking in a few rounds of golf with his brother-in-law, Dale. Before he made his venture back to Washington, he was sure to stock up on several bags of Dakota Style sunflower seeds…enough to get him through to the next summer. Joe is survived by his sister, Joy Dale Hurt, New Salem; nephew, Dale Melissa Hurt, Bismarck; niece, Jodie Harlan Doll, New Salem; three great-nieces, Hailie and Jacie Doll, and Madelyn Hurt; one great-nephew, Jake Hurt; and several cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents and great-nephew, Justin Lee Hurt.
