Joseph "Joe" Vetsch

Joseph “Joe” Vetsch, 93, died October 22, 2009, at St. Vincent’s Care Center in Bismarck.Funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Wednesday at Parkway Funeral Service in Bismarck with Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Military services by VFW Post #1326 will be held at 3:00 PM at ND Veteran’s Cemetery for Joe and re-interment for his late wife, Adelia, will also take place. Visitation will be Tuesday from 1:30 – 2:30 PM at St. Vincent’s Care Center and will continue Wednesday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Joe was born on May 26, 1916, in Emmons County to Rochus and Eva Schneider Vetsch. After Joe’s mother died, he helped his father care for his younger siblings. He enlisted in the US Army on May 5, 1942, and received the American Theatre service medal. He served in Rhineland, Central Europe, and earned the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater service medal. He was honorably discharged on December 7, 1945. Joe married Adelia Hauck on November 2, 1947, and they farmed north of Wishek until retiring to town in the early 1970’s. Joe was a member of VFW, Legion, and St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing cards, and trips to the casino with his niece, Ione, and her family. Joe is survived by his daughter, Norma; four grandchildren, Rhonda Derek, James Angela, John Angie, and Jeff Paula Sayler; seven great-grandchildren, Jordan, Landen, Kayla, Parker, Kaden, Peyton, and Madisyn; two sisters, Angie Schwartzenberger and Julie Williamson; three brothers-in-law, LeRoy Schuchard, Donald Hauck, and Norman Hauck; and four sisters-in-law, Helen Rath, Betty Ruff, Arlene Kirschenman, and Janet Hauck, and all of their families. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his son-in-law, “Red” Sayler; and his siblings, Helen, Isabel, Ben, Tillie, and Martha. Joe had a car accident in 2002 on his way to Bismarck and since then had been a resident at St. Vincent’s Care Center. Joe was known for his wit and sense of humor there and considered the staff his “family” also. The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks for the care he received.
