Karl L Berg

Karl L. Berg, 94, Bismarck, the last surviving child and only son of Ole O. and Marit Marie Berg, passed away on Saturday, March 31, 2012 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday, April 4, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, with Rev. Thomas R. Marcis Jr. officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at Eastgate Funeral Service. Karl was born on a farm near Douglas, ND, on January 10, 1918. The family moved to Nelson County in the fall of 1918, and in 1922, moved to Devils Lake and farmed there. In 1942, Karl joined the United States Army, and on V.D. Day he shipped out for combat in the European Theatre Operations of World War II, where he fought in combat battles throughout western Europe, and served under General George Patton at the Battle of the Bulge. He was honorably discharged in 1945. Upon returning home from Army service, Karl began his vocation as a carpenter and worked in construction in the Devils Lake area until 1954, when he moved to Mandan, ND, where he continued his carpentry work for many years. When he hung up his carpentry belt in the early 1970s, he turned to doing custodial work for Job Service of North Dakota and later for the Bismarck School System prior to fully retiring in the spring of 1982. Karl had a big heart and thoroughly enjoyed helping his friends and neighbors with small carpentry and handyman projects. Karl is survived by his second wife, Emma, Bismarck; stepson, Marvin Jan Fettig and step-grandchildren, Brian and Kimberly. He is also survived by nieces and nephews, Marilyn Stan Kruger, Sheyenne, ND, Hans Orson Leona Sten, Devils Lake, Sonja Bill Gette, Langdon, Joanne Brennan, Dianne Richard Urvand, Norris Corrina Olson, all of McVille, ND, Milton Johnson, Stanwood, WA, Wayne Johnson, Redmond, WA, Ronda Harold Rickard, Everett, WA, and David Ronning, Marysville, WA; and many grand-nieces and grand-nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Katherine; sisters, Odella Johnny Olson, Klara Hans Sten, Emma Ronning, Jordis Ralph M. Johnson and Anna M. Berg; and three nieces, Joyce Aaser, Roberta Baumann, and Mary Louise Olson. Our precious hero, Uncle Karl, will truly be missed.
