Kenneth Tufteland

Kenneth D. Tufteland, 81, Wing, died February 14, 2006 at the Marian Manor Care Center, Glen Ullin, North Dakota. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Wing, with the Rev. Muriel Lippert Schauer officiating. A spring burial will be held in the Wing Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 1:00 - 9:00 PM on Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church. Kenneth Donald Tufteland was born on August 12, 1924, in Cass Lake, Minnesota, to Reverend Marcus B. and Mary Collins Tufteland. Kenny spent most of his life in North Dakota and always loved the people and the way of life there. He fondly remembered traveling with his father to visit families of the local parishes. Ken knew early in life that his father had a knack for people, and Ken thought it a great virtue. Throughout his life it was shown over and over that Kenny was also blessed with this same great knack. Kenny married Viola Elaine Nelson on August 22, 1953, in Larimore, North Dakota. They bought a ranch 45 miles southwest of Bismarck and raised beef cattle and farmed. Kenny also worked as a concrete finisher on the Interstate 94 highway and in 1975 started his own concrete construction business. In later years they moved into Bismarck to be near Viola's parents, Ed and Valborg Nelson. Ken and Viola lived a happy life together and enjoyed one of Kenny's other great loves - his horses. Ken Tufteland talked to horses, he trained horses, and most of all he understood horses. Over the years he raised and trained many horses in the most gentle of ways, and he would tell stories about each one of them, by name, at every possible opportunity. The Tufteland's moved to the Wing, North Dakota, area in 1993 and when Ken retired in 1996, he and Viola moved into Wing. In spite of his retirement, Ken worked on many local farms in the Wing area. Ken worked on the farm of Loren Krein of Tuttle until his health finally slowed him down. Loren and Ken became the best of friends. Ken is survived by his close friends, Mr. and Mrs. Ted Ryberg and Mr. Loren Krein and all his loving friends of Wing, North Dakota. He is also survived by relatives and friends in Minnesota, Colorado, Iowa, and Wyoming. He will be missed by many. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Viola; his parents; and his sister, Mildred.
