Lena Hanson

Lena P. Hanson, 88, of Bismarck, died on October 28, 2008 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Tim Jenks officiating, on Monday, November 3, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday at McClusky City Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 4:00 pm until 6:00 pm Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Lena Herr Hanson was born on September 6, 1920, at the farm home northwest of McClusky, to Gotthilf and Caroline Waltz Herr. She attended Herr rural school in Harris Township and graduated from McClusky High School. Lena was united in marriage to John O. Hanson on May 27, 1941, and became the proud mother of three children, John, Thom and Pat. In l956 the family moved to Bismarck and after doing sales work, Lena worked for the North Dakota Highway Department now the Department of Transportation for 27 years and 2 months. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church Bismarck and a charter member of Bethel Lutheran from its dedication on August 27, 1967 forward. Lena was an active member of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League, holding local, zone and district offices and attending their conventions. Lena was also a founder of Pride, Inc. in 1975 and served on its board until her retirement in 1995. Survivors are her daughter, Pat; daughter-in-law, Leanna Hanson; grandsons, Christopher and his wife Kellie and children Hailey, Aaron and Alex; Craig and his wife Jody and children, Ashlyn and Samuel; siblings, four sisters and one brother-in-law, Martha Hirsch, Castro Valley, CA; Pearl Sundet, Williston; Alice Kleingartner, Bismarck and Elaine Al Mitzel, Fargo; and brothers Robert and sister-in-law Mary Jane Herr, Bismarck; Alvin and sister-in-law Lois Herr, McClusky; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, two sons, John and Thom; sister, Olga Kemmit and brother, Reuben and his wife Garnet Herr. The family prefers memorials to Bethel Lutheran Church and Pride, Inc.
