Lenora Juhala

Lenora Hedstrom Juhala, a resident of Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, died March 15, 2014, after a brief stay at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Saturday, March 22, at Eastgate Funeral Service, 2302 East Divide Ave, Bismarck, with Rev. Paul Schauer officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Trygg Township. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm Friday, March 21, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck. Lenora, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, was born December 16, 1913, to Harry and Sophie Olson Hedstrom in the rural Wing community of Trygg Township. She was educated in Trygg Township schools, Wing High School, and received her teaching certificate from Valley City State College in 1931. She taught in rural schools in Trygg Township until her marriage to Einard Juhala on June 24, 1935. Lenora and Einard raised a family and farmed for many years in Ghylin Township, where they were active and productive members of their community. Lenora maintained strong family ties and was a good friend to all. She was a strong woman who faced any adversity with courage and determination, never losing faith that she could, and would, deal with whatever life dealt her. She liked to say that the secret of her good health and longevity was that she never drank alcohol, never smoked, went to dances and had fun—and worked hard. She was a life long gardener with a "green thumb". After retiring from farming, Lenora and Einard built a home 2 miles south of Wilton, along Highway 83. After Einard's death, she remained in the home until 2007, when a stroke, following surgery for a broken hip, led to her relocating to Missouri Slope Luther Care Center. Lenora is survived by her son, Wayne Juhala, of Courtenay, BC, Canada; her daughter, Janice Bill Spivey Marko of Aynor, SC; grandchildren, Andrew Cathy Marko, Ursula Darryl Gustafson, Ruth Juhala and Eli Juhala; great-grandchildren, Anthony and Nicole Chavez, Kaitlyn Gustafson and Brandon Whitehead; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husband, Einard Juhala; her parents, Harry and Sophie Hedstrom, and her sons Donald Juhala and Laveryl Juhala, as well as many cousins and close friends.
