Magdalen Gross

Magdalen Gross, 85, born July 16, 1921, south of Napoleon, North Dakota, to Paul and Anna Mary Becker Kambeitz, died early Saturday morning, April 14, 2007, at St. Alexius Hospital after a short illness. She was the youngest of ten children. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 12:30 PM at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit in Bismarck with Rev. Thomas E. Kramer and Rev. James Gross officiating. Burial will be at the ND Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. Visitation will be Monday from 1:00 PM - 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service in Bismarck where a vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Magdalen graduated from Napoleon High School in 1940 and taught in a one-room country schoolhouse before marrying Math A. Gross on January 28, 1946. They made their home and raised four children in Napoleon. In 1980, they relocated to Bismarck. In Napoleon she was active in the American Legion Auxiliary, the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, and was instrumental in establishing the Logan County Historical Society and Museum. She was recognized with "Maggie Gross Night" for her involvement in the district Democratic Party. After moving to Bismarck, she volunteered at the St. Alexius gift shop for 15 years where she was known for having embroidered over 200 dishtowel gift sets. She was also active in RSVP, Altar Guild, and Meals on Wheels. Magdalen is survived by her husband of 61 years, Math, as well as their four children, Dick Elizabeth of Bismarck, Jean Eaton Bryce of Brainerd, MN, Stephen Camilla of Bismarck, and Gerald Donna of Fargo in addition to six grandchildren, Amber, David, Matthew, Amanda, Emily, and Alexandra. She is also survived by her sister, Barbara Leo Gross of Napoleon. She was preceded in death by five brothers and three sisters, George, Andrew, Wendell, John, infant Paul, Theresia, Mary, and Margaret. Maggie will be warmly remembered for being a wonderful wife, mother, and grandmother, for her sense of humor, love of pinochle, volunteerism, and faith-filled life. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to a charity of donor's choice.
