Margaret A Hartwick

Margaret Ann Hartwick, 77, Bismarck, was welcomed by her Lord and Savior on June 7, 2012, with her husband by her side at the Baptist Home in Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Tuesday, June 12, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, 519 Raymond St, Bismarck, with Rev. John Guthrie officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm -9:00 pm Monday, June 11, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a rosary will begin at 7:00 pm, followed by a prayer service. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Marge was born on April 21, 1935, in Bismarck, ND, the daughter of John and Ann Colness. She attended St. Mary's Grade School and High School and received a teaching certificate at Dickinson State College. She taught in a one-room rural school house near Moffit and Mandan and was later a substitute teacher at Cathedral grade school. She was also a religious education teacher and parish visitor for Cathedral parish. Marge married Vernon Hartwick on August 9, 1958, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Bismarck. At 107 degrees, their wedding day still holds the record for the hottest temperature for that date. They were blessed with six children, the last of whom was born with severe developmental disabilities. This led to Marge's forty years of volunteer work with persons with disabilities which included planning and developing funding for a drop-in center, summer camps and dances. One of the greatest joys of her life was seeing the happy faces of the participants. She served as Burleigh county ARC president and was active in promoting landmark legislation advocating for individuals with disabilities. She was also a member of the Lullaby Club and a Welcome Wagon Hostess. She was a creative and fun grandma to her many grandchildren. Marge is survived by her loving husband, Vernon, Bismarck; her children, Susan Ken Wangler, Bismarck, Gary Hartwick, Westminster, CO, Nancy Brett Paul, Harwood, ND, Debra Hartwick, Bismarck, and Sharon Eddie Dallas, Beaverton, OR; her siblings, Norma Ron Guttenberg, Linda Jerry Golding, John Colness, Cleo Wayne Scharf; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her beloved daughter Brenda; her sister, Carol; and her parents.
