Norris J Carlson

Norris J. Carlson, 86, died March 10, 2014 in Fargo, ND. Funeral services will be held at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Bismarck, ND, on Saturday, March 15th at 2:00 p.m, with Rev. Donna Dohrmann officiating. Viewing will begin that day at the church at 1:00 p.m. Norris will be buried at 10:00 am Monday, March 17, at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Born June 20, 1927, he grew up on a farm near Mound City, SD. Norris was a veteran stationed in Guam during World War II. He married Jennie V. Hanson on September 23, 1950, and they had two children, David and Darlys. Norris graduated from the Northern State Teachers College with a Bachelors of Science degree in business and history. He taught off and on while finishing his degree and began work at the Montana Dakota Utilities MDU Company in 1952. He became Manager of the Gas Leasing Department in 1985 and retired in June of 1989. He worked at MDU Resources for a total of 37 years. Faith was very important to Norris. He held many positions over the years in the Lutheran Church. He taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir. He was a student and teacher of the Bethel Bible Series. As Superintendent of the Sunday School, he was beloved by the Sunday School boys, who would gather Sunday mornings looking for Mr. Carlson. Norris read the Bible in its entirety each year until his death. He loved history and reading and blessed his family with the gift of writing his own autobiography not long after he retired. Norris and his wife Jennie traveled throughout the United States. Each year their family gathered at their timeshare in Detroit Lakes, MN for their wedding anniversary. Each winter, they spent time in Palm Springs, California, an opportunity to see friends, family, and the nearby sites. Norris is survived by his wife Jennie, his son David L. Carlson Linda, his daughter Darlys Carlson McDonald Marvin, grandchildren Shanna Carlson Osvaldo, Elisa Carlson Marchione Yoran, Andresa Carlson, Nathan McDonald Candyce, Christopher McDonald, and brother Clarence Carlson. He was preceded in death by his parents Oscar and Pauline Carlson, brothers, Olger Carlson, Martin Carlson, Kenneth Carlson, and granddaughter Melissa Carlson. The family asks that memorials be given to Church of the Cross building fund.
