Oliver Ole Usher

In loving memory of Oliver "Ole" Usher, 89, Bismarck, died February 4, 2012, hours short of ninety years old. Services will be held 1:00 pm Thursday, February 9, 2012, at First Baptist Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Mark Jacobs and Rev. Paul Gibson officiating. Burial will be in Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm Wednesday, February 8, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Oliver was born February 5, 1922, in Minot, ND, the son of Charles and Matilda Kabanuck Usher. He grew up in Minot, participated in track and earned the rank of Eagle Scout before graduating from Minot High School. He worked in the Long Beach Ship Yards before enlisting in the Coast Guard following Pearl Harbor. He served in the South Pacific and earned the rank of Electricians Mate Second Class aboard the USS Calloway. Following WWII he returned to North Dakota and worked for Northwestern Bell in Bismarck for thirty-six years in many different positions. In Bismarck he was a founding member of the Bismarck Pistol Club, the von Bismarck Pistol Shoot, and founding member of the Nishu Bowmen Archery Club. He was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Bismarck, building and documenting with home movies, the construction of the current building. Ole was a lifetime member of the NRA, a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers and a 33rd degree Mason. Ole was an avid hunter and hiker and loved the wide open spaces of the North Dakota prairie. He was a man who built his own gun range in his basement, walked miles at a time, lived with a passion, fought a war for his country and fought for his manly existence in a household full of women. Oliver is survived by his wife of fifty-nine years, Vivian Schmitz Usher; daughters, Lynn Daniel Rosenberg of Scottsdale, AZ, Elaine Daniel Almblade of Scottsdale, AZ, Arnetta Steven Peck of Glenburn, ND, Reverend Joanne Jacobs Reverend Mark of Des Moines, IA, and Maxine John Torrance of West Fargo, ND; and thirteen grandchildren. Oliver was preceded in death by his sister, Margaret Wise of Anaheim, CA. Memorials may be given to the First Baptist Church Youth Scholarship Funds.
