Oscar Hay

Oscar F. Hay, 77, Bismarck, died September 3, 2005, at Medcenter One Health Systems. Memorial services will be Saturday at 11:00 AM at Trinity Lutheran Church in Bismarck with Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Oscar was born on October 9, 1927, in Parshall, North Dakota, and grew up on a farm near Raub, North Dakota. He was the oldest son of Oscar Sr. and Pearl Ryan Hay and one of five children. He graduated from Parshall High School in 1945 and immediately enlisted in the Navy during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Oscar married his high school sweetheart, Carmen Sund, on September 29, 1946. He attended Dakota Business College in Fargo and graduated with a degree in business in 1948. Oscar and Carmen moved to Bismarck where Oscar was an accountant with P.C. Bakken, CPA. Their first son, Nick, was born in 1949. Oscar was reactivated by the Navy during the Korean Conflict in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1952. The family returned to Bismarck and Oscar returned to the P.C. Bakken firm. Their first daughter, Laurie, was born in 1953. Brenda was born in 1957 and Kevin was born in 1958. In 1960, Oscar became a CPA. He and his partner purchased the Bakken firm and started the CPA firm of Hoiby and Hay. Oscar practiced as a CPA until 1978 when he suffered a stroke and retired from public accounting. He was the president of the North Dakota Society of CPAs in 1974 and 1975 and was a life member of the Society. After he retired, Oscar was an active volunteer. He was a founding member of the Stroke Support Club. He was president of the ARC of Burleigh County. He served on the RSVP Advisory Board for fifteen years and volunteered nearly 7,800 hours at the North Dakota Heritage Center. Oscar was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and a life member of the Bismarck Elks Club. He received numerous awards for his volunteer services including the Volunteer of the Year Award in 1993 and the Golden Rule Award. Oscar is survived by Carmen, his wife of nearly 59 years; his son, Nick Sandy and their children, Jake, Anisa, and Sam of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his daughter Laurie Rowe Bill and their children, Bill and Catie Beth of Riverdale, North Dakota; his daughter, Brenda Hausauer Dirk and their children, Josh, Nikki, and Drew of Bismarck; his son, Kevin Jackie and their children, Zach, Matt, and Chelsea of Bismarck; two brothers, Lee Dorothy of Santa Rosa, California, and John Louise of Cleburne, Texas; one sister, Lois Hilleren Buzz of Parshall, North Dakota; numerous nieces and nephews; and a special caregiver, Mike Trottier. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister and brother-in-law, Roxy and Leon Severence. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Trinity Lutheran Church or a charity of the donor's choice.
