Peter Schafer

Peter Schafer, 84, Bismarck, died July 1, 2012, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Church of Corpus Christi in Bismarck with Rev. Dennis Schafer officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Thursday from 2:00 – 5:00 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, and will continue at 6:00 p.m. at Church of Corpus Christi where a vigil service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Peter was born on September 16, 1927, in Flasher, ND, the son of Michael J. and Barbara Fix Schafer. He was raised and attended schools in Grant County. Pete was a graduate of Dale Carnegie Sales Course, John Deere Sales Training, and Chicago School of Watch and Clock Repair. He was a member of the 188th Field Artillery, ND National Guard for eight years and served in the military during the Korean Conflict. He was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks and the American Legion. Pete married Vivian Larson on July 4, 1951. He was employed at Bismarck Implement John Deere from 1953 – 1983. He served as parts manager, sales manager, and manager trainer. Pete received many service awards during his years at John Deere. Upon retirement, he worked eight sessions of the ND State Legislature as the bill room clerk, supply coordinator, and Sergeant at Arms. Some of Pete's hobbies were watch and clock repair and gardening. Pete is survived by his wife, Vivian of Bismarck; one son, Wayde of Mandan; two daughters, Wanda Steve Haney of Lawrence, KS, and Wendy Schafer of McCall, ID; seven grandchildren, Noah Schafer, Alyssa Amara Montsion, Emily Brandon Edling, Leah Matt Henry, Will Haney, Matthew Fronk, and John Fronk; four great-grandchildren, Ella Henry, Rece Henry, Lucas Edling, and Jonas Edling; four brothers, Richard Carole, John, Adam Helen, and Jim Marie; three sisters, Marge Andy Schweitzer, Mary Tony Frank, and Jeanie Matt Kraft; and one sister-in-law, Clara Schafer; all of these family members and many nieces and nephews added much joy and happiness to Pete's family life. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Leo and Otto; and one sister, Sr. Charlene Caroline.
