Rachel Engel

Rachel A. Egnel, 85, Bismarck, ND, died Thursday, October 5, 2006, at Medcenter One. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Jake Kincaid officiating. Burial will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 5-7 PM Monday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Rachel was born on January 7, 1921, in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, the daughter of Edgar and Mabel Clapp Belden. She was raised in Shields, ND, and graduated from Flasher High School in 1938. She then attended Jamestown College and graduated form Capitol Commercial College in Bismarck. On November 17, 1940, Rachel married Walter C. Engel and they resided in Bismarck. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Rachel was a devoted wife and mother and began a career as a payroll clerk for MDU Resources when all of her children reached school age. She retired from MDU in 1986, after 30 years of service. Rachel did volunteer work at Medcenter One and Meals on Wheels. Her hobbies were crafting bears, cake decorating, reading, and traveling. Her family was the center of her life and she and Walter were married for 65 years. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Robert Schneider of Santa Ana, CA; two sons and three daughters-in-law, Gary and Donna Engel of New York, NY, Stanley and Donna Engel of Bismarck, and Connie Wagner of Bismarck; one brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Connie Belden of Albuquerque, NM; six grandchildren, Reid Rova, Laurie Richard Burns, Lisa David Willard, Allison Matt Abbott, Susan Len Searfoss, and Britt Engel; four great-grandchildren, Richard, Justin, and Alexa Burns, and J. Lachland Abbott; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Walter; two brothers; two sisters; and her son Ronald Engel.
