Richard Silvernagel

Richard Leo Silvernagel, 63, Bismarck, died November 16, 2006, at a Bismarck care center after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM Monday at Spirit of Life Catholic Church in Mandan with Fr. John Mathai officiating. Burial will be at St. Katherine's Catholic Cemetery in Braddock. Visitation will be Saturday from 4:00 - 9:00 PM and Sunday from 1:00 - 9:00 PM at Eastgate Funeral Service where a prayer service will be held on Sunday evening at 7:00 PM. Richard was born on October 23, 1943, in Emmons County, the son of Anthony and Philipine Unser Silvernagel. He was raised and educated in Braddock, and graduated from Braddock High School in 1961. Richard then graduated from Minot State College with a bachelor's degree in Political Science and History. He went on to receive a master's degree in Education from Utah State University. Richard taught school for several years. He later received a degree in Electronics from United Electronic Institute in Louisville, KY. He was employed with the City of Bismarck as a traffic signal technician for 26 years. He retired in April of 2006. In December of 1967, Richard married Carol Gross. They had two children, Sean and Tamara. Richard was very active with the cancer support group at Spirit of Life Church, Beginning Experience, and AA. He enjoyed all sports especially golfing and hunting and was an avid Green Bay Packers fan. He loved being with his family, playing cards, board games, and dancing. He also enjoyed reading and wrote inspirational notes to family and friends. Richard is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Sean and Mary Beth Silvernagel of Nashville, TN; his daughter and son-in-law, Tamara and Chris Ecken of Louisville, KY; four grandchildren, Avery, Alex, and Evan Silvernagel, and Aidan Ecken; three brothers and sisters-in-law, Anthony and Donna, Myron and Ileen, all of Bismarck, and Leonard and Kitty of Preston, ID; five sisters and three brothers-in-law, Hildegard Mock of Braddock, ND, Phyllis and Albert Dallman of Anchorage, AK, Isabella and Larry Johns of Kokomo, IN, Gladys and Gino Dentice of Hartford, WI, and Mary Ellen Soggie of Bismarck; his special friend, Joan Orvik of Bismarck; and many, many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Charles and Patrick.
