Robert Bob Leo Schwichtenberg

Robert Leo Schwichtenberg II, 90, Bismarck, died October 12, 2013, with the comfort of family by his side. Services will be held at 11:00 am Thursday, October 17, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Rev. Steve Sathre officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm – 8:00 pm Wednesday, October 16, at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at Parkway Funeral Service. Bob "Swiss" was born on September 7, 1923, in Redfield, SD, to Gladys Pearl and Robert Leo Schwichtenberg I. He lived in Redfield, SD, Seattle, WA, Yankton, SD, and finally in Bismarck, ND, in 1936. He attended Bismarck Jr. High and Bismarck High School where he met his future bride, Mary Moses, daughter of Governor John Moses and Ethel Moses. He graduated from Bismarck Junior College prior to his activation in the U.S. Army. Bob served in the European Theatre during WWII, as a Corporal. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with two Bronze Stars, World War II Victory Medal, American Campaign Medal, the Prisoner of War POW Medal and the Purple Heart. Bob was wounded near Ritterschoffer Germany and taken as Prisoner of War in 1944. He was in both Stalag 4B and Stalag 4F. He escaped while being moved from one stalag to another stalag. He spent time in a hospital recovering after finding his way to the U.S. Army front line. He was shipped back to a state side army base until his discharge in December of 1945. Following his discharge, Bob worked for the U.S. Forest in Colorado. Bob and Mary Moses married on January 1, 1946, in Wiboux, MT. Bob and his high school friend Robert Francis, helped build each other's houses across the street from each other on the northern side of Bismarck, where each lived and raised their families. Bob was employed at Wards, Dahl's Men's Wear, State Health Department and until his retirement in 1985, he worked as one of Bismarck's Fire and Safety Building Inspectors. Bob was passionate about sports and he loved his fishing and hunting trips with his W.E.T.S.U. friends. Both he and Mary loved camping at Lake Isabel and after retirement, Bob and Mary traveled around in their RV visiting family and friends. Bob was an artist and loved to paint, carve wood figures, turn wood pieces, tumble rocks to make jewelry of other lapidary projects and he designed and built furniture. He was always involved in photography and, through this love, both he and his son, Jack, helped editors locate, collect, and copy a large number of the historical pictures of "old" Bismarck. Many of which were used in the 1972 Bismarck Centennial Publication. Bob thoroughly enjoyed music and listened to classical artists as well as the jazz of Benny Goodman's Big Bands. He was a "go-to" person and if he didn't know how to fix it, he would help you find the answer. Bob was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck American Legion, V.F.W., Bismarck Elks Club, and was a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. Bob leaves a life of memories to his son, Jack Peggy Schwichtenberg, Bismarck, daughter, Vicki Harvey Schneider, Bismarck, and daughter, Wendy Larry Williams Schwichtenberg, Glenwood Springs, CO; seven grandchildren, Weston Emily Schneider, St. Cloud, MN, Jason Schneider Lisa Mason, Minneapolis, MN, Tyson Schneider, Bismarck, Crystal Goldade, Bismarck, Dara Byron Burns, Mechanicsville, VA, Amy Jo Cory McNaughton, Fort Collins, CO, and Will Kary Tardif, Carbondale, CO; seven great-grandchildren, Hannah Elyse, Alyson Elizabeth, Grant Weston, Jackson Calisto, Nikki Ann, Blake Warren, Kelley Brendl; and many nieces, nephews, and a special group of dear friends. He taught us a lot, and Bob will be dearly missed but his son, Robert Leo II; his wife, Mary Jean Moses; his parents, Gladys Pearl and Robert Leo I, and his brother, Douglas; who preceded him in this earthly death have been waiting with our Creator to welcome him to Heaven.
