Robert Hendrickson

Robert Hendrickson, 95, Bismarck, passed away on April 2, 2014. A memorial service will be held at McCabe United Methodist Church at noon on Saturday, April 5, 2014, with a lunch to follow. Robert was born in Minneapolis, MN, on March 27, 1919. He graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis and attended business school before beginning his banking career in Fairmont, MN. From there he was transferred to the Merchants and Farmers Bank in Cavalier, ND, where he met his future wife, Evelyn Tillett. After two years in Cavalier, Robert was transferred to the Red River National Bank in Grand Forks. He and Evelyn were married two months later. His banking career was interrupted by impending World War II. He enlisted in the Army and saw combat in Europe and was then stationed in Japan for six months. He retired from service as Lieutenant Colonel and went to UND as a business major under the GI Bill. After Robert graduated, he worked in banks in Valley City, Grand Forks, and Bismarck. He retired as chairman of the board of the 1st National Bank in Bismarck in 1979. Robert was involved in many civic organizations; his forte being fundraising. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was always ready for a card game. Robert was a sports enthusiast, and two of Evelyn's and his favorite sports were golf and ice skating. Robert and Evelyn also loved to travel and visited all 50 states and several foreign countries, including Sweden where they had a chance to meet several of his relatives. He had many stories to share about his travels, war years, and early childhood days. Robert is survived by his wife of 74 years, Evelyn; daughter, Becky Clair Cudworth of Bismarck; daughter, Susan Steve Wayne of Minneapolis, MN; son, Bob Lynn Hendrickson of Bismarck; daughter, Debby Walford of Glencoe, MN; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and one nephew, Bill Hendrickson of Minneapolis, MN. He was preceded in death by his infant daughter, Roberta Hendrickson; sister and brother-in-law, Hazel and Ken Laufers; and brother and sister-in-law, Richie and Eva Hendrickson. The family prefers memorials to the YMCA and the Leach Foundation.
