Robert Ruiz

Robert A. Ruiz, 83, Bismarck, died April 27, 2007, at St. Alexius Medical Center in Bismarck. Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center Chapel in Bismarck with Pastor Jake Kincaid officiating. There will be no public visitation. Robert was born in Isabella, Puerto Rico, on April 2, 1924, the son of Antonio and Milagros Padin Ruiz. One of five children, he graduated from public schools there and moved to Ames, Iowa, at the age of 18 to attend Iowa State University. He married Margaret Henning on December 1, 1945, and they had two children while in Ames. Robert served in the US Army from May 1946 to October 1947 in Tech Services in the army-occupied Asian Theatre. After graduating from ISU with a degree in ceramic engineering, Robert moved his family to Vandalia, Missouri, where two more children were born. Career opportunities had them moving later to Hebron, North Dakota, Canon City, Colorado, and then to West Valley, Utah. After retirement, they returned to North Dakota in 1991 to live in Bismarck. Margaret died in February 2002 after a long struggle with Parkinson's Disease. Robert took up residence at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center in November 2006 after neurological complications made it difficult for him to live on his own. Robert enjoyed classical music, baseball, crosswords, and kept up on the politics of the day. He served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church, was a lifetime alumni member of Iowa State University, and was active in the Lion's Club and in professional engineer's associations in several states. He is survived by three daughters and one son-in-law, Lael and Dale Hoerauf of Bismarck, Susan Inman of Kahoka, Missouri, and Mercedes Ruiz of Sacramento, California; one son and daughter-in-law, Robert V. and Jeanne Ruiz of Minneapolis, Minnesota; twelve grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and good friends, Lorraine Hoffman and Casmer Duletski of Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Margaret; three brothers; one sister; and one son-in-law.
