Ruth Guthrie

Ruth Guthrie, 84, Bismarck, died August 15, 2007, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Services will be held at 10:00 am on Monday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit with Rev. John Guthrie, Rev. Thomas E. Kramer, and Rev. Paul Eberle officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Saturday and 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm on Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service. Visitation will continue from 6:00 pm until 9:00 pm on Sunday at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit where vigil services will be held at 7:00 pm. Ruth Elizabeth Gallagher was born on August 8, 1923, at Beach, ND, the daughter of Richard and Lillian Brownfield Gallagher. She was raised in Mandan, ND, where she graduated from Mandan High School in 1940. Ruth attended the College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, MN and the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Ruth married Robert P. Guthrie on September 3, 1947, in Mandan, ND. They lived in Bismarck, where after raising eight children, Ruth worked as a legal secretary. A woman of dignity and integrity, Ruth was blessed with a keen intelligence. She valued education, was a life-long learner and kept abreast of national and world events. Ruth was blessed with an outgoing personality and a witty sense of humor. She had many treasured friends. She was known for her passion for bridge. Ruth took deep pride in her family and had an abiding love for her husband of 41 years, Bob. But most of all, Ruth loved her Catholic faith and her spiritual home, the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. It was this faith that informed everything about her and made her a woman of love. Ruth is survived by her daughters, Mary Gold of Richville, MN, Eileen Gordy Wiese of Bismarck, ND, Annette Bruce Atterberg of Richville, MN, and Susan Guthrie Tom Deegan of St. Anthony, MN; her sons, Jim Guthrie of Cupertino, CA, Peter Marilyn Guthrie of Naperville, IL, and Rev. John Guthrie of Williston, ND; her 22 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; and her sisters, Margaret "Tudy" Ryan of Appleton, WI, and Helen Moen of Lenexa, KS. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Richard and Lillian Gallagher; her husband, Robert P. Guthrie; her daughter, Bridgid Norgaard; her sisters, Inez "Kitty" Wolfe, Kathryn Eckroth; and her brother, Richard Gallagher.
