Valentine Kuntz

Valentine "Val" Kuntz, 87, Bismarck, died September 8, 2013, at Sanford Health Care Center on Sunset, Mandan. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:00 am, Friday, September 13, at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with Rev. Msgr. Jim Braaten officiating. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 2:00 pm – 8:00 pm Thursday, September 12, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a vigil/rosary will begin at 7:00 pm. Valentine was born February 4, 1926, in Flasher, ND, the son of Kilian and Mariana Jacob Kuntz. He was raised and educated in Raleigh, ND. In 1946, he was drafted into the U.S. Army and served 18 months in Japan. He was discharged in 1947 and returned to farming with his dad. In June 1953 he married Caroline Werner, making their home on the family farm in Raleigh, ND, and to this union six children were born. He married Deborah Haag in October 1980 in Mandan, making their home in Raleigh, and to this union one child was born. Val was very proud of and loved the farm; and was able to farm up until three years ago. He was proud to be a WWII veteran and was a member of the American Legion. Val liked to and was very good at carpentry work, built dressers, tables, and cedar chests, for himself, kids, grandkids, and others. He was able to use his carpentry talents with work at St. Gertrude's Church. Val had a lot of try, and gave 110% to everything he did. He went to every basketball and sporting event he could attend for his kids and grandkids. Val's favorite day of the year was his names day "Valentine's Day," which was celebrated by many family and friends. Val was very optimistic and never complained about anything, no matter how bad it was. He and Debbie cherished every minute together along with their dog, Skeeter. He was a member of the Dogtooth Antique Tractor Club, a lifetime member of the Raleigh Canadian Lynx Rod and Reel, lifetime member of the American Legion, and Knights of Columbus. Val served 35 years in the Raleigh Saddle Club, and 33 years as the Raleigh Township Board president. He enjoyed playing cards and shooting darts. Val is survived by his wife, Debbie, Bismarck; his five sons, Kilian Khadeem, Portland, OR, Andy Vicki, Flasher, ND, Isidore Sandra, Dickinson, ND, Don Ann Haag, Mandan, and David, Bismarck; three daughters, Anita Chuck Krohn, Woodbury, MN, Karen Garth Blumhardt, Bismarck, and Mary Mike Fox, Wheaton, MN; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Francis Schmidt, Flasher, ND, and Eva Martin Vetter, Linton, ND. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Caroline; his parents; three sisters, Clementine, and two in infancy; and one brother-in-law, Martin Vetter.
