Verlie A. Hammond

Verlie A. Hammond, 77, Bismarck, passed away at St. Alexius Medical Center on December 16, 2010. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 12:00 Noon at Word of Faith Church in Bismarck with Rev. Dom Vetter officiating. Burial will be at ND Veteran's Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 12:00 – 3:00 p.m. at Eastgate Funeral Service. There will be no visitation at the church. Verlie was born on February 7, 1933, in Helena, MT, the daughter of Eva Linn and Fred Guettler. She attended Helena High School in Helena, MT, and began working at Mountain Bell Phone Company at the age of 18. She then transferred to Bismarck Telephone Company in 1979. Verlie retired from the telephone company in 1985. She married Jim Amundson in 1955 and had one son, Scott. Her husband Jim died in 1961. She then married Fred Koenig and they had two children, Karla and Fred. On April 29, 1977, she married Jerry Hammond, her soul mate, in Coeur d' Alene, ID, who died in 2004. She missed him deeply every day. Verlie enjoyed playing her piano and making Christmas tapes for family and friends. She also loved to play Bingo. In the last two years of her life, Verlie loved to watch the Christmas display across the street. She called it her Christmas card. It would give her joy to watch for hours. Verlie enjoyed writing poetry and this was one of her favorites: New Years Wishes I have many New Years wishes, for you within my heart. And all my special wishes, have a true love, love to impart. Wishes for your happiness now and all the year through— Wishes for the best of health to always dwell with you. May you walk in the sunshine, at the dawn of each day, and as evening shadows fall, may the bright stars lead your way. May your heart be free from sorrow, all friends be kind and true, and your loved ones make a heaven here on earth for you. May your blessings be so many, that you can truly say— My cup has runneth over, I thank thee Lord, each day. Verlie attended Word of Faith Church and was a member of the Amvets. She had three lifetime friends that she stayed in touch with in Montana, Eva O'Connel, Mary Ann Music, and Lou Backstrom. Verlie is survived by her sons, Scott Sabrina Amundson of French Town, MT, and Fred Dralinn Koenig of Bismarck; her daughter, Karla Hammond of Bismarck; her grandchildren, Shalimar Schaeffer, Korbin Koenig, and Kyle and Sean Amundson; her sister, Audrey Smith of Dannemora, NY; her nieces, Pam Shidu of Honolulu, Hawaii, Rinda Opp of Hazelton, ND, and Linda Reh of Plattsburgh, NY; her nephews, Shane Fellows of Hazelton, ND, Tim Shidu of Auburn, WA, Tyler Smith of Dannemora, NY, and Terry Smith of Columbus, IN; and special friends, Dave and Judy Chitwood of Bismarck. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Eva Guettler; her brother, Johnny Guettler; and her sister, Pauly Smith.
