Vernon Fahy

Vernon "Vern" Fahy, 82, died September 25, 2004 at the Longmont United Hospital in Longmont, CO. Services will be held at 11 AM Monday at Church of Corpus Christi, Bismarck, with the Rev. Paul Becker officiating. A private military graveside service will be held at the North Dakota Veteran's Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be from 2-9 PM Sunday at Boelter-Eastgate Funeral Service and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Vern was born April 17, 1922 to James and Josephine Murphy Fahy in Hanks, ND. He graduated from St. Leos High School in 1940. Vern enlisted in the United States Army in 1942 and was honorably discharged in 1944. He married Margaret Norby July 12, 1947. Vern worked in the engineering, planning, and administration divisions for the City of Minot beginning in 1948. He accepted an appointment as city manager of Minot in 1965. Vern resigned that position in 1972 to accept an appointment as State Engineer and Secretary to the State Water Commission. He continued in that position until retiring in 1989. In his retirement, he spent time as a Water Resource Consultant for the Garrison Diversion Conservancy District and the North Dakota Wetlands Trust Committee. Vernon and his wife, Margaret, and their children enjoyed a cabin at Lake Metigoshe during the years they lived in Minot. After moving to Bismarck in 1972, Vern developed a passion for both horses and golf and enjoyed pursuing those hobbies. "G-Dad" was his grandkids' biggest fan when he attended their various sport or school events. Vern and Margaret moved to Longmont, CO in December of 2002. Vern was a registered Professional Engineer for the State of North Dakota, president of The National Water Resources Association, president of The Western States Engineers Association, chairman of The Missouri River Basin Commission and a number of other state, federal, and international commissions. Vern is survived by his wife, Margaret, Longmont, Co; his daughters and sons-in-law, Holly Widmann and husband, George, Calipatria, CA, Patricia Fahy MD and husband, Bruce Katuna MD, Longmont, CO; his sons and daughter-in-law, Michael and wife, Candace, Colorado Springs, CO and David P.E., Houston, TX; his grandchildren, Kelly Fahy and Lee Fahy, Fargo, ND, Cory and Jamie Katuna, Longmont, CO, Gretchen Whannel, Calipatria, CA, and James Shoemaker, Kingman, AZ; great grandchildren, Jacob and Jonathon Whannel, Calipatria, CA and James and Renette Shoemaker, Kingman, AZ; and his brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and wife, Kay, Boise, ID.
