Vincent Schmidt

Vincent Schmidt, 80, Bismarck, died January 19, 2013 at St. Alexius Medical Center. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, January 23, 2013, at Church of St. Anne, 1321 Braman Ave, Bismarck, with Father Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan. The family will receive visitors starting at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday, January 22, 2013, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, a prayer and sharing service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Vincent Schmidt was born February 15, 1932, in Logan County to Valentine and Clara Schmidt. He received his first communion on June 30, 1940, at St. Boniface Church and graduated from Weigel School in Kintyre. Vince served in the United States Army, including the Korean War, from 1952 to 1954. Upon returning from the war, he proposed to his wife, Regina Wald, with an engagement ring costing $110.00. They were married on June 22, 1954, at St. Anthony's Church in Napoleon. Vince was a plumber by trade working at MDU, M. Welsch & Sons, Century Plumbing and Johnson Controls. He later earned his Masters in Plumbing and co-owned his own business, JV Enterprises. Vince was actively involved with the Democratic Party and once ran for the ND House of Representatives. He remained interested in politics his entire life, taking a special interest in elections. Vince was a member of St. Anne's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, the AmVets and Eagles Clubs. Vince was an honest, caring, and loving man. His cheerful demeanor and witty sense of humor filled the lives of those who knew him. You could always count on him for a good story and a competitive game of pinochle. Vince also enjoyed gardening and fishing. He could strike up a conversation with anyone and usually knew someone everywhere he went. He had a love for good food; soups, crab legs, Chinese cuisine and soft serve vanilla ice cream being some of his favorites. Vince is survived by his wife, Regina, Bismarck; four daughters and three son-in-laws, Deb Hausauer, Bismarck, Colleen and Ed Hovrud, Prior Lake, MN, Mary and Tom Hulm, Bismarck, and Sandra and Gus Miller, Lincoln, NE; his 9 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers, James, Wishek, ND and Anthony Tony Fletcher, NC; four sisters, Regina Jane Schreiner and Francis Kelsch, Bismarck, Barbara Kilzer, Lake Geneva, WI, Deloris Dorsie Lipp, Jamestown, ND Vince was preceded in death by his mother and father; his daughter, Linda; son, Gary; and sisters, Eva and Lorraine. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery or the AmVets, Bismarck.
