Waldemar Wally Maas

Waldemar "Wally" W. Maas, 88, Bismarck, died March 14, 2015, at Sanford Health, Bismarck. Services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday, March 19, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Pam Power officiating. Burial will be held at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm Wednesday, March 18, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Wally was born March 6, 1927, at Krem, ND, the son of Fred and Hulda Kuch Maas. He was raised on the family farm north of Hazen ND, where he attended a rural school north of Hazen. Wally attended high school in Hazen and graduated in 1945. He served in the US Navy during WWII on the U.S.S. White Plains from Spring 1945 through Fall 1946. After serving in the Navy he taught rural school in Mercer County. He also worked on construction of the Garrison Dam during the summer of 1953. Wally married LaVerna C. Hinsz on Dec. 26, 1947, in Zap, ND. He continued his education by attending Dickinson State for some summer sessions and in 1952, he and his wife enrolled full-time at Dickinson State. While in college, he also worked as dispatcher at the Dickinson Police Dept. After graduation from Dickinson State College in 1956 he worked as the school administrator at Almont, ND, for five years. In 1961 the family moved to Bismarck where he taught school until 1992, when he retired. Wally was a member of the American Legion and VFW and he was a life-member of the ND Education Association and the National Education Association. He attended UND during summer sessions and earned his Masters Degree in Elementary Education. Wally enjoyed spending time with family, gardening, fishing, hunting, trapping, selling and donating garden produce, growing gladiolas and selling them to area florists, reading western novels, and enjoyed the outdoors. Wally is survived by his wife, LaVerna, Bismarck; his children, Sharon Maas, Bismarck, Jackie Sinclair Pat, Killdeer, Dana Maas Kathryn "Kitty", Fitchburg, WI, Delon Maas Lynne, Coatesville, PA, and Robyn Cummings Bob, Billings MT; his grandchildren, Trevor Sinclair Shayla, Hazen, ND, Tjaden Sinclair Andrea, Fargo, ND, Jadah Kerr Samuel, Beach, ND, Nathanial Maas, Canton, OH, Katie Ariel Maas, Fitchburg, WI, Zach Maas, New York City, NY, Kendra Maas, Raleigh, NC, and Zoë Maas, Coatesville, PA; great-grandchildren, Treston, Truvy, Jackson, Brielle, and Thornton Sinclair; Ahava, Addalee, and Annaliese Kerr; and brothers and sisters, Gertrude Berndt, Fargo, ND, Dennis Hazel Maas, Riverside, CA, Hilmer Joyce Maas Minot, ND, Mildred Ervin Unruh, Hamilton, MT. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gordon; sisters, Dorthea and Carolyn; brother-in-laws and sister-in-law; mother-in-law and father-in-law; great-granddaughters, Tresha and Taylee Sinclair.
