William Bill I. Daniel

William "Bill" I. Daniel, 88, died peacefully surrounded by his family at Sanford Health Sunset Dr. Continuing Care Center, Mandan on February 12, 2014. Services will be held at 2:00 pm Monday, February 17, at Legacy United Methodist Church, 4600 Durango Dr, 1 block north of the corner of 43rd Ave. and N Washington St., with the Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial will be in the Veteran's section of Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm Sunday, February 16, and from 9:00 am-12:00 Noon Monday, February 17, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Bill was born on October 10, 1925, in Sykeston, ND, the son of Forrest and Hattie Hollingsworth Daniel. Bill grew up in Sykeston and graduated from Sykeston High School in 1944 where he enjoyed participating in football, basketball and track. At the age of 18, Bill was drafted during his senior year and joined the U S Navy during WWII. He served with a Carrier Aircraft Service Unit in Hilo, Hawaii, and later at Chula Vista, CA. Bill was extremely proud of his military service and attended several Naval reunions around the country. In 2010, Bill was very excited to be on the Roughrider Honor Flight to Washington, DC. The welcome home celebration at the Bismarck Airport was very touching to him. Bill was a true patriot and proud to be an American. He flew his flag at his home daily and faithfully attended Memorial and Veteran's Day services in the area. Bill was a member of the American Legion. After his Honorable Discharge from the Navy in 1946 and at the age of 22, Bill decided to follow his father's career path as a barber. He attended Moller Barber College in Fargo and then moved to Bismarck. Bill enjoyed the majority of his barbering career on Broadway Ave. in downtown Bismarck including 10 years at Clem Schiff's Barber Shop in the Greyhound Bus Depot building. He then opened his own shop for many years, Daniel's Barber Shop, in the basement of the Cowan Building at the corner of 4th St & Broadway Ave. After 27 years of barbering, Bill retired at the age of 48 but always had a few friends who wanted him to cut their hair. He gave his last cut just 2 months ago. Living simply and investing wisely allowed him to enjoy many years of retirement. Bill enjoyed managing his farmland and a small apartment house. Early in 1952, Bill met the love of life, Alice Wall, who was working at the lunch counter in the Bus Depot next door to the shop he worked at. Bill and Alice married later that year at the First United Bretheran Church on October 26th. Bill cherished their 61 years together enjoying their family and the many simple things in life. A year after marriage, they started a family with the birth of their daughter Gail. Bill was proud of her long career with the County and State of ND. Gail was a patient care provider to him as he entered his late stage struggle with Alzheimer's and was always there to assist. Their son, Bill was born a few years later. While his son was in college, Bill encouraged him to consider a career in real estate as he was always interested in real estate and had customers who were in the business at Lahr & Lahr. At age 19, son Bill took his advice and continues to enjoy a great career at Daniel Companies. At the age of 63, Bill became a very proud Grandpa and enjoyed the countless hours he spent with his two grandchildren, Britney and Taylor. He loved watching all their sporting activities and spending every holiday together. Grandpa Bill also loved taking them to Medora and the State Fair. Britney and Taylor were definitely the light of his life. Bill dearly loved his daughter- in-law, Bonnie, who assisted him with medical appointments and yard work. Bill was a huge Dakota Wizards fan and was named the 'Super Fan of The Year' in 2001. He only missed 4 games in all the years they played in Bismarck. Bill was grateful that his grandson, Taylor, accompanied him to many games. Anyone who knew Bill, soon knew that he loved to tell stories and visit. He enjoyed history and following politics. He was a compassionate man who was very caring for those less fortunate. His quiet, unrecognized generosity benefited many. Bill is survived by his wife, Alice; his daughter, Gail; his son, Bill and daughter-in-law, Bonnie; his granddaughter, Britney; his grandson, Taylor; and family friend, Gayla Gienger, all of Bismarck. Other survivors include, brother- in-laws, Walter Wall of Coquille, OR, and Lenhart Wall of Tappen, ND. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Hattie Daniel; and his brother Forrest W. Daniel. Memorials may be given to the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation, Alzheimer's Association or donor's preference.
