James Hyland

James A. "Jim" Hyland, 87, of Bismarck, died at his home on October 19, 2003. Funeral services will be held in Bismarck on Saturday at 11:00 am at the Church of Corpus Christi, with the Rev. Paul D. Becker officiating. Graveside services will be at 11:00 am on Monday, October 26th at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery in Mandan. Visitation will be from 12:00 noon to 9:00 pm on Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service and one hour prior to the funeral service at the church. Jim was born September 12, 1916 in Bismarck, North Dakota, the son of Jennie Rudd Hyland and James A. Hyland, Sr. After graduating from Bismarck High School in 1934, he attended the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Jim worked for Prudential Life Insurance Company prior to entering the US Army in 1941, where he served in the European Theatre during World War II. Jim and Rose Schmidt were married on July 18, 1942 in Tacoma, WA while he served in the army. Upon his discharge from the service in 1945, they settled in Bismarck where Jim worked for over 30 years as an auditor for the Internal Revenue Service. Jim was a member of the Sons of Norway, VFW, American Legion State Band, and a charter member of both the Elks Band and Chorus. In addition to his love of music, Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing. Jim is survived by his wife, Rose of Bismarck; his two daughters and sons-in-law, Cheryl Hyland John Otis of Taos, NM, and Betty Jean Cornel Pokorny of Atascadero, CA; his two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Lynn Jean Hyland of Marietta, GA and Dr. Glen Sandy Hyland of Bismarck; twelve grandchildren, Lisa Ron Yost of West Linn, Or, Dawn Dean O?Connor of Altoona, IA, Jonathan Amy Fricke of Redmond, WA, Kim Craig McDonald of Dallas, TX, Peter Margaret Pokorny of Portland, OR, Vanessa Danny Schwartzman of Brooklyn, NY, Jenny Eric Baumgartner of Loveland, OH, Kevin Hyland of Dunwoody, GA, Greg Hyland of Atlanta, GA, Jody Hyland of Fort Collins, CO, Kerry Hyland of Atlanta, GA, and Laurey Jo Hyland of Federal Way, WA; six and a half great grandchildren; one sister, Marian Lords of Woodland Hills, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Tamara Fricke. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Bismarck Cancer Center.
