Ann Demick

Ann M. Demick, 89, Bismarck, died January 28, 2009, at St. Alexius Medical Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at 3:30 pm Saturday at Marillac Manor, Bismarck, with Rev. William Rushford officiating. Ann was born October 27, 1919, during the “thistle” years around Regent, ND, the daughter of Joseph and Beata Jahner Greff. She grew up on “The Farm” north of Mott, attending German/English rural schools, graduating from the eighth grade when she was only 12. At age 15 she joined some of her sisters at Winona and then Rochester, MN, working at St. Mary’s Hospital. Around 1944 she traveled to San Bernardino, CA, to work and married Carl Nagel. Carl was killed during the war. After a couple of years, she ventured to Cheyenne, WY. There she met and married Frank Demick. After a few years in Cheyenne, they moved to Joliet, IL, where Ann started her 30-year career working as secretary for Sears Roebuck. Having lived 17 years in Joliet, they made a move to Reno, NV, where Frank was Assistant Chief Engineer for Mapes Hotel Enterprises and Ann continued her work with Sears and later retired with Sears. After her husband Frank died on February 25, 1985 in Reno, Ann stayed on until 1996. While in Reno, Ann was a member of St. Thomas Catholic Church and Altar Society. She was also a member of the Legion of Mary. She then sold her condo and moved to Custer, SD, to live with her sister for a short time until she made a move to Bismarck to the Marillac Manor. During this time Ann enjoyed many visits from family and friends far and near. Besides her great love of God no matter how desperate life seemed-she always kept her faith and trust in the Lord her other great love of playing cards was her life, if not with family it was with friends, but always ready for a game of cards. While living in Bismarck, Ann was a member of both Church of the Ascension and Marillac Manor Chapel, attending Mass every day. Ann is survived by three brothers and sisters-in-law, Val and Marlene Greff, Regent, ND, Al and Eulalia Greff, Mandan, ND, and Joe and Ann Greff, Cheney, WA; four sisters and three brothers-in-law, Beata and Bill Moses, Beaverton, OR, Pauline and Ed Galles, Rapid City, SD, Kay and Roy Severson, Mandan, ND, and Rose Caliento, Canajoharie, NY; along with many nieces and nieces. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Frank and Carl; an infant daughter, Patty; five brothers, Vincent, Michael, Frank, Kasper, and Sam; and five sisters, Margaret Nagel, Tilly Friedt, Sally Frank, Ida Heidt, and Cecilia Kullman.
