Arnold Weiss

Arnold T. Weiss, 88, Bismarck, died February 2, 2006 in a local hospital. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with the Rev. Thomas R. Marcis, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens with military honors by local Amvets Post #9. Visitation will be from 1:00 to 8:00 PM Sunday at Eastgate Funeral Service and one hour prior to the service at the church. Arnold was born May 9, 1917 near Zap, North Dakota, the son of William and Bertha Dubs Weiss. He attended school in Mercer County and graduated from Mandan High School. On November 11, 1941, Arnold married Regina Pischel at Sidney, Montana. In June of 1941, Arnold was inducted into the US Army for the duration of World War II. His military duty took him to Europe where he participated in many battles and much enemy resistance. Some of the battles and campaigns included Normandy, France, Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe, and Battle of the Bulge. He was wounded in action in Germany on November 12, 1944. He received the Purple Heart and several other medals during his service. On October 15, 1945, he was discharge at Camp McCoy, Wisconsin. After returning to North Dakota and attending Capital Commercial College he accepted a position with the Army Corps of Engineers at Fort Lincoln which is now where United Tribes is located. His employment transferred him and his family to Riverdale, ND in 1953. In 1960, Arnold and his family returned to Bismarck where he accepted a transfer with the Federal Soil Conservation Agency in Bismarck. Arnold retired from federal service in 1979 and continued to work part-time in accounting and budget related employment with the Lewis and Clark Regional Council in Bismarck for 15 years. Although he traveled the world, he most enjoyed his home, spending time with family, especially grandchildren. He enjoyed fishing, reading, yard work and traveling. Arnold is survived by his daughter, Pearl Renner of Bismarck; his sons and daughters-in-law, Armon and Joan and Gary and Kathy, all of Bismarck and Gerald of Ft. Lauderdale, FL; seven grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Leona Vanderhoof of Sidney, MT. He was preceded in death by his wife Regina; his parents; his brothers, Elmer, John, Reinhard, and Edgar; one sister, Laura; and one infant twin brother.
