Bernice Huss

Bernice Huss, 96, Bismarck, passed away on Saturday, May 1, 2010, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. There will be a memorial service and celebration of her life at 2:00 pm Sunday, May 9, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, with Pastor Dick Smith, visitation pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. There will be no visitation, as cremation has taken place. Bernice Anna Ostreim was born January 30, 1914, in Osakis, MN, to Joseph and Ellen Ostreim. When she was very young, they moved to Wimbledon, ND, where she graduated from Wimbledon High School in 1932. Irvin W. Huss, a teacher and principal at Wimbledon High School, caught her eye, and they were married August 14, 1937, in Eckelson, ND. They moved to Bismarck in 1937 when Irvin was given a teaching and coaching position at Bismarck High School. It was in Bismarck that Bernice and Irv raised four children: Charles Geri, San Diego, CA, James Connie, Rapid City, SD, Marilyn Marshall Murdoch, Bismarck, and Sally Terry Wood, Fargo, ND. Bernice and Irv joined Trinity Lutheran Church and became life-long members in 1937. Bernice was active in her Bridge Club, Birthday Club, Sewing Club, and her Trinity Lutheran Church Circle. She was an excellent pianist, loved to garden, and was known in her 4th street neighborhood as the “Begonia Lady.” Bernice was noted for being an excellent seamstress and cook, and her family will always remember fondly her beautifully decorated Christmas cutout cookies. One of her great passions was her angel collection. Bernice worked for a number of years in the church office, but her main occupation was being a homemaker and taking loving care of her family. Besides her children, Bernice is survived by her grandchildren, Kristi TJ Sullivan, Rob Jennifer Huss, Greg Barb Huss, Gary Becky Huss, Kristin Larry Larson, James “JJ” Stephanie Murdoch, Matthew Jaime Wood, and Joelle Mathew Fischer. Also surviving her is a sister-in-law, Madelyn Ostreim, Fairfax, Virginia; and thirteen great –grandchildren, Hannah and Lauren Sullivan, Daphne Huss, Kyle, Tyler, Hannah, and Cameron Huss, Oscar Huss, Thomas Murdoch, Samuel Larson, Macie Jo Murdoch, Tanner Wood, and Lila Ann Fischer. She was preceded in death by her parents, Joe and Ellen; her husband, Irv; a sister and brother-in-law, Evelyn and Ronald Burchill; a brother, Russell Ostreim; and later by her fiance, Evander Nelson. The family is grateful for the wonderful care that Bernice received while she was a resident at the Primrose Retirement Community and later at the Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Thank you also to the Medcenter One Hospice staff for the very excellent and professional care they administered. Memorials can be directed to either the Ruth Meiers House in Bismarck or to Trinity Lutheran Church.
