Betty Miller

Betty Miller, 87, of Bismarck, ND, passed away peacefully Monday morning, April 21, 2014. Betty had suffered from Alzheimer's disease for several years and was residing in a nursing home near St Paul, MN. A celebration of life will be held at 10:30 am on Monday, April 28, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck. Burial will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery, Bismarck, ND. Visitation will be held on Sunday from 5:00 – 8:00 PM at Parkway Funeral Service where a vigil service will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue on Monday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Betty was born October 6, 1926, in Mankato, MN, to Jack and Esther Linquist. She attended school in Mankato and graduated from Mankato Technical School. She went on to become the executive assistant to the president of Herberger's department store in St. Cloud, MN. There she met Richard "Dick" Miller and they were married in St. Cloud, MN, on June 22, 1948. They moved to Bismarck, ND, in 1953 to start a new business called the Linquist Fixture Company specializing in restaurant equipment. Together Betty and Dick raised six children. They spent over 45 years as parishioners and choir members of Cathedral of the Holy Spirit church, and were active supporters in everything involving Cathedral Grade School and St Mary's High School. Betty was an incredible wife and mother. Dick nick-named her "Sharpie" because he always thought she looked so beautiful. As a loving mother she spent countless hours baking and taking part in her children's activities, school outings, etc. In addition to raising her family, Betty was very involved in volunteer work in the community. She was president of the League of Women Voters for a few years, and on the board of Ancilla Club with University of Mary. Her true passion was the work she did as president of the Board of Directors for the School of Hope for over 15 years, a school in Bismarck for special needs children, which later became Child's Hope Learning Center. Years later she volunteered weekly at Heartview Treatment Center in Mandan, ND....working in the gift shop and assisting with Welcome Committees for new patients. She also worked for St. Alexius Foundation before retiring. Betty and Dick were able to travel frequently after retirement. Some of the most enjoyable times were spent taking motor home trips with Betty's sister Shirley and her husband Bob, and visiting their children all over the country. She is survived by her children, Rick Susan, St. Paul, MN, Mark Jo, Mesa, AZ, Susan Neuenschwander Chad Nelson, Fargo, ND, Peter Lisa, Irving, TX, and Tom Ellen, Apopka, FL; ten grandchildren, Heather Hart, Bismarck, ND, Matthew Hart, Lino Lakes, MN, Dash Miller, Tucson, AZ, Kara and Tyler Miller, Irving, TX, Justin and Paul Neuenschwander, Austin, TX, Tori, Autumn and Madison Miller, Apopka, FL; six great-grandchildren, Mitch and Noah Miller, Bismarck, ND, Michael and Hailey Hart, Leno Lakes, MN, and Jonah and Marleigh Willey, Irving, TX; and her sister, Shirley Silbaugh, and niece, Sandra Silbaugh, of Spokane, WA. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, Dick; her daughter, Nancy Hart; and her parents, Jack Linquist and Esther Wagner. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be given to the GOD'S CHILD PROJECT, 721 Memorial Hwy, Bismarck, ND, 58504.
