Carmen S Hay

Carmen Sund Hay entered into eternal rest on August 3rd at her home in Bismarck surrounded by her children after a courageous battle with cancer. A memorial service will be held at Charity Lutheran Church at 10:30 am on Monday, August 12, 2013, with the Rev. Scott Bauman officiating. Cremation has taken place and there will be no visitation. Lunch will be served following the service. Carmen was born September 18, 1926, the eldest of five daughters, to Roy and Ruth Hansen Sund, in Parshall, ND. Carmen was raised and educated in Parshall and graduated from Parshall High School in 1944. While in high school, Carmen met the man of her dreams, Oscar Hay. They were married on September 29, 1946. After Oscar finished college, they moved to Bismarck where Oscar practiced as a CPA in his own firm and where Carmen embarked on her lifetime career of making a home and raising her family. Although her family always came first, Carmen was involved in numerous other activities. Her faith was very important to her. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church for over 60 years and for the last ten years was a member of Charity Lutheran Church. She was a Bethel Bible Study teacher for many years. She was the chairwoman of Trinity's wedding reception committee for 32 years. In 1978, Oscar suffered a massive stoke. Carmen cared for him in their home for the next 27 years until his death in 2005. They were the founding members of the Sanford Medcenter One Stroke Support Group and spent countless hours helping other stroke victims. Carmen is survived by her son, Nick and his children Jake, Anisa and Sam of Minneapolis; her daughter Laurie Bill Rowe and their children Billy Lauren and Catie of Riverdale; her daughter, Brenda Dirk Hausauer and their children Josh Melissa, Nikki Andy Lutz and Drew of Bismarck; and her son, Kevin Jackie and their children Zach Ashley, Matt and Chelsea Hay of Bismarck; five great-grandchildren, Kallie, Aubrey and Ryker Hay and Jaxon and Caden Hausauer; her four sisters, Joanne Jim King, Jeanne Lyle Qualley, Joyce Annette Ken Westrum; and Beth Jim Mar; Oscar's siblings, Lois Hilleren, Lee Dorothy Hay and John Louise Hay; numerous other loved ones; many treasured friends; and the hospice nurses from Sanford Hospice, particularly her friend Sandy. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Central Dakota Humane Society, 2104 -37th St, Mandan, ND 58554 or the Oscar and Carmen Hay Scholarship Fund at the University of Mary, 7500 University Dr, Bismarck, ND 58504.
