Frances Hagel

Frances Hagel, 91, Center, passed away April 30, 2013, at Sakakawea Medical Center, Hazen. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am Monday, May 6, at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center. Burial will be in St. Martin Catholic Cemetery, Center, ND. Visitation will be held from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm Sunday, May 5, at St. Martin's Catholic Church, Center, where a vigil will begin at 7:00 pm. Frances was born October 28, 1921, to Morris and Emily Winchel Weisgarber in Oliver County. She was raised and educated in Center. She worked as a housekeeper and a waitress at Schulz's Café. Later in life, she received great satisfaction volunteering at the House of Manna, where her quilts and braided rugs were greatly appreciated. On February 10, 1942, Frances married George Hagel at St. Martin's Catholic Church in Center. They purchased Hagel Coal Mine from George's father in 1946. Frances happily gave her love and time to her children and her grandchildren; and she loved playing cards and games with them. Her greatest passion was sewing and quilting. She made quilts and braided rugs for her family and others. She loved making Barbie doll clothing for her grandchildren. Frances baking and her donuts were a special treat. Frances truly had a green thumb. Her houseplants were always beautiful. She had a huge garden every year and generously shared the produce with others. She kept a journal all her life. She also had many scrapbooks of current and past events. She was a member of St. Martin's Alter Society. She believed strongly in the power of prayer and in the Lady of Fatima. Frances is survived by her children, James Ellen Hagel, Kennewick, WA, Eugene Eva Hagel, Albuquerque, NM, Kathy Tom Lipp, Bismarck, Loretta Glenn Roth, Bismarck, Julie Glenn Zahn, Beulah, Betty Eugene Yantzer, Center, Jackie Jack Schwab, Hazen, and Janice Bill Matthews, Washburn; one sister, Katherine Carpenter, Wheatland, WY; and one sister-in-law, Agnes Weisgarber; 20 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Frances was preceded in death by her husband, George; her parents; four brothers; two sisters and three sisters-in-law; two grandsons, Jeffrey Zahn and Michael Hagel; and one daughter-in-law, Donna Hagel.
