Glenn Dolan

Glenn Dolan, 94, Bismarck, died May 1, 2004 at a Bismarck care center. A memorial service will be held on Friday, May 7 at 11:00 AM at Lutheran Church of the Cross in Bismarck with Pastor Donna Dohrmann officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. There will be no public visitation but a prayer service will be held at Eastgate Funeral Service on Thursday, May 6 at 7:00 PM. Glenn was born on December 30, 1909 in White Earth, North Dakota, the son of James and Charlotte Lynch Dolan. He attended school in White Earth, graduating from high school in 1927. In 1937 he received his Bachelor of Science degree from Minot State College. He attended Colorado State College of Education at Greeley, Colorado and Montana State University at Missoula. Glenn earned his Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the University of North Dakota. He taught for two years at rural schools at White Earth and Stanley, North Dakota; five years at Arnegard, North Dakota; and twenty-one years at Kenmare, North Dakota. In 1963 he became State Director of Guidance and Counseling in the Department of Public Instruction. He retired in 1977, having served in the field of education for forty years. Glenn married Lois Hansen of Kenmare at Nazareth Lutheran Church on June 7, 1940. Together they were active members there and later in Bismarck at Lutheran Church of the Cross, sharing their love of music. Lois served as organist and choir accompanist while Glenn directed the church choirs. He enjoyed playing baseball in his younger years and watching it in his senior years. Glenn also enjoyed fishing and golfing, but his special loves were always music and people, directing choirs for nearly fifty years. He served two sessions as a state senator for the Republican Party from 1955 - 1957. Glenn received the Outstanding Alumni Award from Minot State University in 1977. In 1978 he received the Member Emeritus Award of North Dakota Personnel and Guidance. Retiring in 1977, Glenn worked with the program for adult non-readers and also youth with learning disabilities. He served as a consultant with Montana-Dakota Utilities for several years, setting up pre-retirement programs for their employees. For eighteen years, he was active as Program Director for the Retired Men's Breakfast Club and found great enjoyment in this endeavor. In 1993 he was the recipient of the Service to Mankind Award from the Bismarck Sertoma Club and he also received the same award at the district level, the North Dakota-Manitoba District. The North Dakota Association for Counseling and Development honored him by establishing the Glenn Dolan Award, given annually to the outstanding counselor of the year. Glenn is survived by his wife, Lois of Bismarck; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Anita Gay and Walt Wicklein of Baltimore, Maryland, Kathryn and Jim Hoss of Ventura, California, and Patricia Jones of Bismarck; eight grandchildren, Erik Sandra Wicklein, Matt Jill Wicklein, Susan Hoss, JoEllyn Hoss, Amy Curtis Hoss-Knight, Beth David Hoss-Hagler, Chris Kara Jones, and Laura Jones; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters-in-law, Ann Dolan of Portland, Oregon, Adele Johnston of Plentywood, Montana, and Jean Drury of Henderson, Nevada; one brother-in-law, James Hansen of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews, including Darryl Karen Dolan of Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Edward, James, and Bern Dolan; and one sister, Gladys Kuhlman. The family prefers memorials to Lutheran Church of the Cross, St. Alexius Hospice, or the Baptist Home.
