Hattie Schneider

Hattie J. Schneider died on August 28, 2003, at her home after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure on the 11th of July. Services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Church of St. Mary with the Rev. Bruce Krebs officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon to 9:00 PM Friday at Eastgate Funeral Service where a rosary will be held at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue for one hour prior to the service at the church. Hattie was born in Logan County on October 22, 1909, to Michael and Genevieve Masseth on the family homestead. She attended rural schools there. She worked hard on the farm with her many chores and loved to ride horses. She learned to drive a car at age 12 and drove until she was 89 without ever having an accident. She was proud of this record. Her family moved to Bismarck when she was 17 years of age. On June 24, 1929, she married Anton Schneider at St. Mary's Church in Bismarck. Hattie practiced her faith with joy and sincerity all of her life. She cultivated a personal relationship with our Lord through prayer several times a day. She passed into eternity immediately after a reading of Psalm 23 to her by her sons and daughter. She became active in St. Mary's Altar Society, holding the office of Treasurer for 22 years and helped with many funeral dinners. She was always willing and ready to help cook for the St. Mary's High School Carnivals held each year before Lent started. Her four children all attended St. Mary's High School so it held a special place in her heart. Hattie was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary since 1964, having had three sons in the military. She was also a member of the Eagles. She loved to visit with friends and family and relate stories from the time of her youth to the present time. Because of her fantastic memory, she could recall in great detail the history of many families whom she knew and met throughout her lifetime. Many people came to her to find out some information for their own family history. She remembered names, places, and dates as well. Hattie was a great cook and loved to cook for her family, relatives, friends and whoever stopped at the house - many at meal time. Her home was always open to everyone. In her earlier years, she enjoyed hunting and fishing with her husband and in her later years, she took her two younger sons fishing with their friends. Hattie loved to dance, and with her husband won some contests dancing the polka and waltz. The sport of bowling was also something she enjoyed for a number of years; winning some trophies at times. She loved to play cards with family and relatives, played Bingo and took trips to the Casino with friends. She loved her family most of all: her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren-helping out wherever she could. And she visited the sick whom she knew in the hospital and in the nursing homes. We will all miss her presence as all who knew her loved her so very much. Hattie is survived by her daughter Lila Jane and son-in-law, Gordon Simon of Casper, Wyoming, sons Paul Schneider and Michael Schneider and wife Kim, daughter-in-law Eileen Schneider, all of Bismarck; grandchildren: Sandra Curtiss, Kent and Ron Simon, Barbara Gmeiner, Lynne and Robert Schneider, Debbie LaCombe, John, David, Jennifer, Rebecca and Desiree′ Schneider; 12 great grandchildren; and one step great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her husband Anton Schneider, her oldest son Eugene Duke, her parents Michael and Genevieve Masseth, six sisters and six brothers-in-law, and four brothers and sisters-in-law. The family requests that all memorials be given to St. Mary's Central High School Scholarship Fund or St. Mary's Parish.
