Herbert "Herb" Mattis

Herbert Mattis, 77, Bismarck, died September 26, 2008. Services will be held at 10:30 am Thursday at Faith Lutheran Church, Bismarck, with Rev. Wes Aardahl and Rev. Chris Alexander officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm Wednesday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services at the church. Herb was born July 24, 1931, in Adams County, ND, the son of Gottlieb and Rose Beck Mattis. He was raised and attended school in Hettinger where he graduated. Herb entered the U.S. Army in 1952, and served in Korea where he received the Bronze Service Star. Herb married Delores Royset on September 2, 1961, in Moorhead, MN. They lived in Fargo until 1966 when they moved to Bismarck. Herb farmed near Hettinger with his brother Oscar for over 50 years. He also worked as a construction contractor in Bismarck. Herb was a lifetime member of the VFW, and also belonged to the American Legion, Elks and Moose Club. He was particularly proud of his work with the VFW and serving with the VFW Military Honor Guard. Herb was a man of integrity and principle who had a strong work ethic. He took pride in accomplishing a project and in having a job well done. Herb loved people and took time to visit with folks about their lives. He believed a man’s word was worth more than gold. He is survived by his wife, Delores, Bismarck, ND; his son, Timothy Mattis, Moorhead, MN; his daughter, DeAnne Daniel Berwald, Vadnais Heights, MN; his grandchildren, Christopher and Amber Mattis and Kaitlyn and Branden Berwald; his brothers and sister-in-law, Oscar Bertha Mattis, Hettinger, Henry Mattis, Cheyenne, WY; his sisters and brothers-in-law, Lillian John Martin, Bismarck, ND, Frieda Solem, Anchorage, AK, Arleen Brad Rice, Walla Walla, WA; his sisters-in-laws, Edyth Bohjanen, Lino Lakes, MN and Doris Mattis, Dickinson, ND; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Delores’s family, Ilene Ray Anderson, Buffalo, SD; Gary Royset, Bainbridge Island, WA; Gayle Loren Unruh, Great Bend, KS; and Karen Jon Jennings, Bismarck, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Emil Mattis, Arthur Mattis and Reinhold Mattis and two nephews, Gregory and Melvin. Memorials may be given to the VA Medical Center, attn: Voluntary Service, 2101 Elm Street, Fargo, ND, 58102, or the ND State Veteran’s Cemetery.
