Karissa Ulmer

Karissa Ulmer, 19, Sawyer, ND, died September 27, 2014, in her sleep while attending training at Fort Lee, VA. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 am Monday, October 6, 2014, at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck, with Rev. Msgr. James Braaten officiating. Burial will be held at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 3:00 pm – 9:00 pm Sunday, October 5, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a vigil will begin at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. Karissa was born July 7, 1995, in Bismarck, ND, the daughter of Jerrod and Valerie Mosset Ulmer. She was raised and educated in Bismarck and Williston and graduated as an honor student from Sawyer High School in 2014. Karissa enlisted in the North Dakota Army National Guard on April 5, 2013. She served a total of 1 year 5 months and 23 days and was currently attending Advanced Individual Training School at Fort Lee, VA. Karissa was awarded the Army Achievement, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, and ND Basic Training Ribbon. Karissa loved animals, enjoyed watching TV, reading, could always be found with her phone in hand, art projects, spending time with her friends. In her early years she participated in soccer, and was part of a dance team and track in high school. She was an altar server at Church of the Ascension, Bismarck. Karissa was part of the Big Sister Program in Bismarck and her Big Sister was Hannah Vanorny. Karissa was an intelligent, positive, upbeat person, who was full of energy all of the time. Karissa is survived by her mother, Valerie Ulmer and her special friend, Doug Moos, Sawyer, ND; her brothers, Devyn Ulmer, Bismarck and Joshua Ulmer, Sawyer; her grandparents, Alvin and Kathy Mosset, Linton, Dennis and Dorothy Ulmer, Highlands Ranch, CO; and her aunts, uncles, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her father, Jerrod Ulmer; and her great-grandparents, Tillie and Wendelin S. Mosset, Florence Becker Mattern, Oswald and Angie Pung, and Arthur and LaVerne Ulmer.
