Lola J Schott

Lola Jeanne Schott, 79, Mandan, North Dakota, died August 28, 2014, at Sanford Health, Bismarck, ND. Services will be held at Legacy United Methodist Church, Tuesday, September 2 at 11:00 a.m., with Rev. Kermit Culver officiating. Burial is at Fairview Cemetery, Bismarck. Visitation will be held on Monday, September 1, from 3:00 – 9:00 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Lola was born December 4, 1934, in Bismarck, ND, daughter to Silas and Rose Panko Umber of Selfridge, ND. She received her early training in a one-room school in rural Sioux County, ND. She graduated as a boarding student at McLaughlin South Dakota High School. Lola was active in 4-H and had a passion for horses and livestock presentation. After high school, Lola attended Cascade College and Portland State University, both in Portland, OR. Lola was married to Walter Schott June 10, 1956, with whom she recently celebrated 58 years of marriage. Together they raised three sons beginning in Spokane, WA, and Reynolds, ND. Mandan has been the family home for the past 48 years. After raising her children, Lola went back to school, attending the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND. She graduated with Honors in the field of Elementary Education. Lola retired from teaching after 19 years at Shiloh Christian School of Bismarck. She continued her vocational interests as a Private Tutor and assistant at Noah's Ark Daycare and Preschool, Bismarck. Lola worked in ministry alongside her husband, Walter, for more than 50 years. She enjoyed music and joined Walt on many occasions to sing duets for events throughout the Dakotas. She was passionately involved in Youth Ministry, serving as volunteer Conference Counselor/Camp Director for 20 years, attending National Youth Conferences, and serving on the staff at First UMC of Mandan. Lola was equally passionate about the church in mission through cross-cultural ministry. She traveled nationally and internationally engaging in service projects, as both a participant and group leader. She for years coordinated local mission conferences. Lola also served the cause of Women's Ministry within the United Methodist Church in positions local and statewide. In 2007 her ministry to the denomination was observed through a Special Ministry Recognition by the national General Board of Global Ministries Women's Division of the United Methodist Church. Lola and Walt have been involved for 32 years with law enforcement and the International Conference of Police Chaplains, where Lola served as President of the Women's Auxiliary. She is remembered for her work with the Mandan PD during the annual Law Enforcement Appreciation Weak. Following her cancer diagnosis, Lola founded the Faith-based Cancer Support Group at Legacy UMC. Hobbies included outdoor adventures, gardening, canning, cooking, entertaining, reading, and extensive travel. One of her greatest fulfillments was her love for family and friends…known by all through her exquisite hospitality, attention to detail when entertaining in the family home, her always hand-written words of encouragement and inspiration through countless cards mailed from her desk, and her effortless ability to put others before herself. Always positive, never complaining, these acts are symbolic of a legacy of compassion, care, deep faith and outreach to others. Lola is survived by her husband, Walter Schott of Mandan, ND; her children, Randy Kim Schott of Overland Park, KS; Brian Gina Schott of Vashon, WA; Jonathan Schott of Burien, WA; her grandchildren, Ryan Schott of Overland Park, KS; Stephanie Danny Curtis of Santa Monica, CA; and Christopher Schott of Denton, TX; her sister, Shirley Dillman of McIntosh, SD; and her brother, Frank Marilyn Umber of McIntosh, SD. She was preceded in death by her parents, Silas and Rose Umber; her brother, Silas Umber, Jr.; sisters Selma Dutton and Sylvia Umber; two sisters in childhood, Josephine and Dora; and an infant brother.
