Marvin O. Speidel

Marvin Speidel, 86, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2011, at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center, Bismarck. Services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday October 25, with Rev. Wes Aardahl officiating. Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be held on Monday from 2:00 - 8:00 p.m. at Eastgate Funeral Service in Bismarck and will continue on Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church. Marvin Oscar Speidel was born February 6, 1925, in Ashley, ND, to Jacob Speidel and Maria Aipperspach Speidel. Marvin attended school in rural McIntosh County, North Dakota. He met his wife Ruth Thurn in the same rural community, and they married on October 24, 1948, at St. Andrew's Lutheran Church in Zeeland, ND. He and Ruth spent six years farming. In 1954 they moved to Bismarck where Marvin, a skilled mechanic, held numerous jobs before purchasing three Texaco service stations in Bismarck. Many memories were made as Ruth pumped gas while Marvin performed full service on vehicles. As self service pumps became popular, Marvin left the gas station business and became a mechanic and bus driver at the Bismarck Public School. Marvin had an especially large heart for children with special needs and spoke often of the students whom he loved greatly. Children had a way of gravitating to Marvin, a soft spoken man of few words. During his last week of life, he was shown a picture of his family and pointed to his great-grandchildren saying, "I love them all!" Marvin loved spending time with family especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and pinochle playing friends, fishing, working on cars, cross stitching, quilting and spending time with family pets. Marvin is survived and will be greatly missed by his wife, Ruth Speidel, Bismarck; sister, Irene Ketterling, Jamestown; children, Linda Reinicke, Bismarck, and Larry Speidel, Bismarck; grandchildren, Scott Julie Reinicke, Minot, Jeremy Jen Reinicke, Missoula, MT, Christopher Marea Reinicke, Bismarck, Justin Reinicke, Honolulu, HI, and Nathan Kim Speidel, Bismarck; and great-grandchildren, Braylee and Lexie Reinicke, Minot, Abbey and Katie Reinicke, Missoula, MT, Jaden and Kyler Reinicke, Bismarck, Gage and Aurora Speidel, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by parents, Jacob and Maria Speidel; and brother, Wilbert Speidel.
