Otto F Victor

Otto Victor, 100 years old, passed away March 29, 2013, at Villa Maria Nursing Home under the care of hospice in Fargo, ND. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12:30 pm Tuesday, April 2, at Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, Bismarck, with Rev. Msgr. Thomas Richter officiating. Burial will be in the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Visitation will be held from 5:30 – 8:00 pm Monday, April 1, at Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, where a prayer service will begin at 7:00 pm. Otto was born June 24, 1912, in Fort Clark, Oliver County, ND, to Mike and Mary Victor. The oldest of seven children, he worked on his parents farm and helped care for his siblings. He attended school through 8th grade in Fort Clark. Many years later he would receive his high school diploma through a special program for veterans. He enlisted in the army in 1941 and was a member of the 188th field artillery based out of Cheyenne, Wyoming. One day shy of being released, Pearl Harbor was bombed and his tour of duty was extended. He married Mina Manly of McKenzie, ND, on December 9, 1941, in Cheyenne, Wyoming. He was then sent to Fort Lewis, Washington for training. After a year, he was stationed in San Louis Obispo, California as a member of the 749th MP battalion to guard the west coast. He spent the next 4 years at various locations in California. After his discharge in 1945, he returned to McKenzie, ND, to his wife and daughter Jane. He farmed in McKenzie, Moffit, ND, and the Anderson ranch for a few years. He worked for the highway dept. for 1 year. He drove for Dan Dugan for the next 25 years and retired in 1977. Otto was very active in the Democratic Party and worked the elections for many years. Both he and his wife were involved in square dancing and made many wonderful friends. He was blessed to have been able to see the dedication of the WWII memorial in Washington, DC, with his granddaughter and great granddaughters. He was also blessed to be able to participate in the Honor Flight and see the memorial with his grandson. While there, he was thanked for his service by strangers and couldn't understand why he was receiving so much attention. He said he just did what he was supposed to do. Otto is survived by his wife Mina, age 94; granddaughter, Anne Kidder and her husband Kevin, Fargo; grandson, Dave Hruby and his wife Pam, MS; two great granddaughters, Grace and Kaitlyn Kidder; a step grandson, Stan and his wife Marie, NE; five step great grandchildren, Amanda, Bryan, and Chris Stan's children; Grady and Karla Dave's stepchildren and four step great- great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Jane; and step great grandson Jason Dave's stepson. Otto was known as Papa by his family and will be missed terribly. We are grateful for all the wonderful years we had with him and his memory will live on in our hearts forever.
