Pauline Johnson

Pauline Johnson, 97, formerly of Kintyre, died on March 22, 2014, at St. Gabriel's Community in Bismarck. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, March 25, at 10:00 am at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Parkway, with Rev. Susan Anderson officiating. A private family burial will take place at a later date. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. Cremation has taken place. Pauline Haid, the daughter of Russian immigrants Fred and Mary Haid of rural Temvik, was born on May 10, 1916, the eighth of nine children. She attended rural Emmons County schools, worked on the family farm, and cared for her widowed father until his move to Michigan. She moved to Napoleon where she worked as a waitress at the Brown Café and later the Miller Café. She married Arnold M. Johnson on February 19, 1944, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Napoleon. They made their home with Arnold's parents for eight months until they purchased their own farm six miles south of Kintyre. They raised two children: Connie and Delaine. Pauline worked side by side with Arnold on the farm. Plowing and harvesting the land, making hay, milking cows, butchering, and maintaining their home gave her great satisfaction. She always raised a large garden and became adept at preserving the produce. She was an excellent cook and baker who loved to serve her family and farm friends and neighbors who stopped in to visit. Arnold and Pauline thoroughly enjoyed the company and relished get-togethers. She was well known for her goody bags of cookies, doughnuts, or cakes that needed to be taken home from the farm. Pauline made afghans and quilts, making sure all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren had an afghan from Grandma. She crocheted and mended countless pairs of jeans for her family and others. Family and faith were important to her. They were lifelong members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Kintyre, where she for a time was the church cleaning lady. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were precious to her; her lap was always available for them to snuggle on. Arnold and Pauline were always overjoyed to babysit their little ones. After Arnold became ill in 1994, the couple moved to Napoleon. Following his death in 1995, Pauline continued to live there until she moved to Linton in 2002 to live with her daughter Connie. She later moved to Bismarck in 2006 and lived at Edgewood Vista. She lived there until she moved to St. Gabriel's Community for her last week and a half. Pauline is survived by her daughter Delaine John Kambeitz of Bismarck; her grandchildren Kim Jamie Brecht, and Kelly Amber Bossert; Chad Kambeitz and Kipp Sheena Kambeitz; great-grandchildren Aubrey and Tenley Brecht; Autumn and Devin Bossert; Aaliya and Jasmine Kambeitz; and Kaylee Kambeitz. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Arnold; her daughter Connie and son-in-law Terry Bossert, and Baby Bossert; her brothers John, Ed, and Fred; her sisters, twins Amelia Eichenberger and Elizabeth Fried, Maggie Johnson, Helen Fried, and Mary Backman.
