Regina Schmidt

Regina Schmidt, 86, went home to be with the Lord on June 13, 2008 in Bismarck. Services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday at the Church of St. Anne with Rev. Ed Wehner officiating. Burial will be held at Mandan Union Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM until 9:00 PM Monday at Parkway Funeral Service, Bismarck and will continue one hour prior to the service at the church. A Vigil/Rosary will be held at 7:00 PM on Monday. Regina was born April 1, 1922 in Greenway, S.D., the daughter of Mathias and Regina Aberle Hartze. She grew up on the family farm near Greenway and attended school at Campbell, S.D. At the age of seventeen, she came to Bismarck to be a family caregiver for women who were in the hospital having babies. She worked as a waitress at several cafes in Bismarck until she married Nick P. Miller on June 1, 1948 at the Church of St. Mary, Bismarck. They made their home in Mandan, where Nick was employed as a mechanic at Chase Chevrolet and Regina was a homemaker. On June 6, 1974, Nick passed away. Regina married Martin A Schmidt on June 17, 1978 at the Church of St. Joseph in Mandan. They made their home in Moorhead, MN, until Martin retired in 1981 when they returned to Bismarck. Martin passed away on April 6, 2007. Regina lived at Valley View Heights for one year and in February of 2008 she entered Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Regina enjoyed embroidering, sewing, cooking, baking, and playing pinochle. She was a member of St. Anne’s. Regina’s family was her life. She enjoyed her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Regina may have been small in stature, but she had a large heart. Regina is survived by seven daughters, Caroline Richard Sabot of Bismarck, Mary Larry Dresser of Center, Darlene Allan Morris of Mandan, Patricia Ben Bennett of Amarillo, Texas, Nancy Don Peterson of Minot, Shirley Todd Bentley of Clark, Wyoming, and Colleen Miller of Minot; three sons, Jerome Miller of Fargo, Kenneth Miller of Alamogordo, New Mexico, and Allen Christie Miller of Lenoir, North Carolina; twenty-three grandchildren; twelve great-grand children; numerous nieces and nephews; six sisters, Mary Nick Renner of Mandan, Elizabeth Liles of Harrison, Tennessee, Theresa Cunningham of Aberdeen, S.D., Magdaline Orvin Kramer of Strasburg, Helen Tom Volk of Hague, and Evelyn Hartze of Minneapolis, MN.; and one brother, Peter Doris Hartze of Little Falls, MN. Regina was preceded in death by her parents; nine siblings, Matt, Frank, Mike, Simon, Martin, Anton, Paul, Katie, and Caroline and great-grandson, Declan Morris. The family extends their thanks to the staff at Valley View Heights and Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center for the care given to Regina.
